The LMTO Play-through
One Sunday a month, LMTO organises a gathering of musicians and singers to rehearse the music from a full length musical. A 70 piece orchestra and a 70 strong chorus is selected from a registered group of performers. The orchestra and singers rehearse separately throughout the day, and then come together in the evening to run the show from start to finish. The event takes place with no audience present in the privacy of the Great Hall at Bishopsgate Institute, where LMTO is the Orchestra-in-Residence.
The Play-throughs are strictly private events. In order to take part, you need to sign up to the Play-through list.
The Play-throughs are run for the benefit of three groups.
The Play-throughs are first part of the LMTO musician development programme. The day is designed around young professionals who want to gain experience playing Musical Theatre repertoire, but is open to all with a passion for the genre. The best players identified at the Play-throughs go on to be "devs" in the orchestra for our public concerts.
For each Play-through we select soloists and a full chorus. The day is designed around singers and actors who want to improve their choral singing, and gain a deeper knowledge of the Musical Theatre canon. The best singers identified at the Play-throughs go on to form the LMTO Chorus, which performs in our public concerts.
Of the twelve Play-throughs we run each year, around four are new orchestrations. These might be a total reimagining of a much loved score, or an upscaling of a small arrangement for larger forces.
