Once a month, LMTO organises a gathering of
musicians and singers to rehearse a full length musical, but with no
audience present. We form a 60 piece orchestra with a 60 strong chorus
and rehearse the show separately throughout the day, before running the
show in the evening in a sitzprobe style format. Each
play-through offers unique opportunities. For instrumentalists, it is
the chance to perform classic and modern works in a friendly no-pressure
environment. For singers it is the opportunity to sing roles entirely
out of cast type, and build on ensemble singing skills. For all
involved, the day is a chance to remind yourself why you got into this
business in the first place - a deep-seated desire to perform. Because
it is in private, there is no pressure at any stage.
The play-throughs also give arrangers a chance to flex their orchestration muscles. For shows which lack a full orchestration, we take the current arrangements and scale them up to full symphony orchestra size. Play-throughs are mostly not auditioned - players and singers sign up for the events each month. In order to receive the sign up sheet, you’ll need to be on the LMTO Play-Through List. Each show is then fixed based on creating the best mix of participants to ensure the day’s overall success. We welcome new people at every event - and most subsequently return. A few of the most popular orchestra places (mainly brass and woodwind) are auditioned on a six-monthly basis. Information about these auditions will be sent round to the list at the appropriate time.
As Orchestra-in-Residence at Bishopsgate Institute, the whole day is based in their beautiful building surrounded by the hubbub of Liverpool Street. Rehearsals take place in their newly built studios, with the final run through held in the magnificent Great Hall.
